Bien el origen de esta palabra bien de que antiguamente se ponía el aperitivo encima del vaso de vino por lo que “tapaba” el recipiente para que no entrasen bichos voladores tales como moscas o mosquitos, de ahí la palabra “tapa”.
Hay mucha gente que asegura que el origen de esta palabra surge de la siguiente historia:
El Rey Alfonso XIII estaba realizando una visita oficial a la provincia de Cádiz y al pasar por el Ventorrillo del Chato (venta que aún hoy existe) se paró para descansar un rato. El Rey pidió una copa de Jerez, pero en ese momento una corriente de aire entró en la Venta y, para que el vino no se llenara de arena de la playa el camarero tuvo la feliz idea de colocar una lonchita de jamón en el catavinos real. El Rey preguntó por qué ponían esa loncha de jamón sobre la copa, y el camarero disculpándose le dijo que colocó así la “tapa” para evitar que el vino se estropease con la arena. Al Rey le gustó la idea, se comió la tapa, se bebió el vino, y pidió que le sirvieran otro, pero con “otra tapa igual”. Al ver esto, todos los miembros de la Corte que le acompañaban pidieron lo mismo.
